Whether you’re an athlete, a nutrition enthusiast, or someone looking to improve your eating habits, understanding your macro and micronutrient intake is key for taking your tracking to the next level.

Here at Cronometer your macro and micronutrient targets are calculated by the details you input when creating your profile and the Dietary Reference Intakes. This is a great starting point for users who are new to nutrition tracking but if you have specific goals or want to get the most out of Cronometer then you have come to the right place.

What are Macro and Micronutrients?

Before diving into how to set your Macro and Nutrient Targets it’s important to understand what they are.

Macronutrients consist of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. These are the nutrients your body needs in large amounts to provide energy required for daily activities and serve as the building blocks of the diet.

Micronutrients are essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs in smaller amounts, but they are crucial for overall health. They support various functions, including immune system strength, bone health, and energy production.

To learn more about macro and micronutrients visit our Nutrition for Beginners blog here.

How to Set your Macro and Micronutrient Targets

To get to your Macro and Nutrient Targets, tap to More, then Targets (Targets + Profile on web), from there you will have several menus where you can adjust respective settings. On web scroll to the bottom of the page to find your Macro Targets and Nutrient Targets.

NEW & IMPROVED TARGET SETTINGS

We’ve recently improved the Macro and Nutrient Target interface so that is easier to use and hides advanced settings for a straightforward approach to target settings. Users also have the ability to set percentage-based ratios in addition to ratio, fixed or keto settings.

Adjusting Macro Target Settings

To set your Macro Targets users have the option between using Macro Ratios, Fixed Targets or the Keto Calculator.

Macro Ratios

The Macro Ratios setting determines your macronutrient targets by dividing your energy target across protein, carbs, and fat according to the ratios you’ve specified. Whenever your energy target changes, your macro targets will automatically adjust to maintain your specified protein:carbs:fat ratio. Your energy target will also update throughout the day as you log exercises or record a new weight in your diary.

Note that the numbers you enter as ratios will not be equivalent to the target numbers found in your Diary. To set your Macro Targets to a specific gram amount continue reading to learn about Fixed Targets.

Fixed Targets

If you select the Fixed Targets setting, your macronutrient targets will stay consistent each day. By default, it uses the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) from the Dietary Reference Intakes for macronutrients. However, you can manually adjust your targets by entering fixed gram amounts for each macronutrient in the provided boxes.

Note that if you choose Fixed Targets and have also set a custom weight goal, your total calories for your Macro Targets may not match your Energy Target, as these values are calculated independently of each other. If you want your Macro Targets to align with your Energy Target, we recommend setting a Custom Energy Target that matches your Fixed Target values.

Ketogenic Target

Selecting a Ketogenic target is a special dynamic macronutrient target setting. To learn more about the Keto diet visit our blog here.  With this setting turned on Cronometer calculates a maximum protein target based on your lean body mass, sets a maximum carbohydrate target, and allocates the remaining calories to fats.

After choosing the Keto option, you can select from four programs: Rigorous, Moderate, Relaxed, and Custom. These programs will define your specific targets for protein, carbs, and fats.

Advanced Settings

To really dial in your Macro Ratio Targets, tap on the Advanced Settings on the bottom of the menu. With this section open, you have the ability to choose between a percentage calculation or ratios as well between ratios of kcal’s or grams.

Also within the Advanced Settings, you have the option to track carbohydrates as total carbs or net carbs. Total carbs includes all types of carbs in your target, including fiber whereas net carbs account only for digestible carbohydrates. This approach can provide more accurate estimates of energy from carbs, as dietary fiber contributes less energy than digestible carbs like sugars and starches.

By default, we calculate Net Carbs as: Net Carbs = Total Carbs – Fiber – Sugar Alcohols. To learn more about using the advanced settings visit the Cronometer User Manual here

Macro Target Settings

Adjusting Nutrient Target Settings

By default, each nutrient is set to the recommended values established by the USDA Dietary Reference Intakes, tailored to your age and sex. Ideally, you should aim to meet or exceed 100% of your daily minimum nutrient targets. However, if you specifically require more of a particular nutrient you can edit that by navigating to More > Targets > Nutrient Targets.

To edit a target, toggle on the Custom button, then enter a value in the Daily Target and Max Threshold boxes. The Daily Target will be the value seen in the Nutrient Summary on the Daily Report and in the Nutrition Report. Users can also edit Nutrient Targets from the Nutrition Report by tapping on a nutrient, toggling on Use Custom Value and entering your custom values.

In Conclusion

Thats how you adjust your Macro and Nutrient Targets on Cronometer. To learn more about the process visit our User Manual on Macro Targets or Nutrient Targets. The process is designed to be quick and easy but extensive for those users requiring full customization of their targets. So dive in, adjust your settings, and start making the most of your nutritional journey with Cronometer. Happy tracking!

Tracking food on Cronometer has never been faster or easier than with the Barcode Scanner – and yes, this feature is available to all users, completely free of charge.

From the mobile app, simply scan the food’s barcode to find a match within our database. If the food doesn’t already exist, easily create a Custom Food by snapping a few pictures. This makes it super convenient to get all the nutritional info you need, helping you stay on top of your diet with minimal effort.

How to Use the Barcode Scanner

Our Barcode Scanner is only available on our mobile app, so from your device, tap on the + at the bottom of the screen, then tap ‘Scan Food’. The camera will open and you scan the barcode automatically (if you cannot scan the barcode, you can manually enter the barcode number by tapping on Type Barcode at the bottom of the screen).

Once the barcode has been scanned, and the food is found in our database, users will be directed to the food listing where they can enter the serving size and add the food to the Diary.

No Match? No Problem

The magic of the Barcode Scanner really begins when a barcode can’t be matched to a food in our database. If you scan a barcode and nothing registers, don’t stress as Cronometer always has you covered with the ability to quickly create a Custom Food.

After an unsuccessful barcode scan tap ‘Create New’ on the prompt. Next, take photos of the nutrition label and front of the packaging. Cronometer will wave it’s magic wand and automatically populate the nutrition information, you’ll just need to fill in a few additional details.

Just like that, you have a new Custom Food which can be added to your Diary right away. To learn more about Custom Foods visit our User Manual

NEW & IMPROVED AUTOFILL

We’ve recently improved this process with better autofill technology and added support to read international nutrition labels.

Submitting for Review

While your new Custom Food can be added to your Diary right away, you’ll also have the option to submit it to our curation team for review so it can be uploaded to the Cronometer Database (CRDB).

Once our curation team has reviewed the new food, it will be added to our public Cronometer Database. We take this extra step to ensure the food you search for on Cronometer is as accurate as possible. The more new foods our users scan, the bigger our database becomes, while still remaining accurate.

And that’s it! With Cronometer’s Barcode Scanner, tracking your nutrition has never been simpler. Whether you find what you need in our extensive database or create a new Custom Food, the process is designed to be quick and easy, helping you stay focused on your health goals without the hassle.

So next time you’re logging a meal, just scan and go—Cronometer will handle the rest. Happy tracking!

Nutrition Score Focuses on Men's Health

Available Free To Male Users For The Month Of June

It’s no surprise that males and females are quite different in many ways but they both require a unique set of macro and micronutrient targets in order to be their healthiest selves. So, in celebration of Men’s Health Month in June, we are releasing our Men’s Health Nutrition Score to all users for the month of June!

Normally our Nutrition Scores are only available to our Gold Subscribers, but for the month of June, we are releasing this one score to all of our male users, free of charge.

What Is A Nutrition Score?

Our Nutrition Score feature bundles specific macro and micronutrients together and gives users a percentage value for how they are hitting their targets. We have Nutrition Scores for all targets, electrolytes, bone health, immune support, metabolism support, antioxidants, keto & more!

What Goes Into The Men's Health Nutrition Score?

Our men’s health Nutrition Score includes the nutrients that males are typically lacking such as protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium. The Nutrition Score will give you a percentage for how well you’re hitting your targets for these nutrients. In order to score 100%, you’ll need to reach your recommended daily intake of all of these nutrients. Going over the recommended daily intake will also affect your score.

Why Is This Important?

Protein
Men generally have higher protein needs due to larger lean body mass and tend to prioritize protein intake over any other macro or micronutrient. Studies show that eating healthy sources of protein can lower the risk of several diseases and premature death (10).

Fiber

A high fiber diet has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation (1). Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check, hence why it’s touted to help with weight management and digestive health.

Calcium
99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and if one does not eat enough calcium-containing foods, the body will remove calcium from bones (4). Keep your bones in tip-top shape by keeping an eye on your calcium intake.

Vitamin A
Men typically lack vitamin A in their diet, which is needed to be able to see at night. It also helps with immune function. In some studies, higher intakes of vitamin A can be linked to lower risk of lung cancer but that result has yet to be replicated by supplementation. So it’s best to try and get your vitamin A intake through food.

Magnesium
This mineral plays an important role in assisting enzymes to carry out various chemical reactions in the body such as building proteins and strong bones, and regulating blood sugar, blood pressure, and muscle and nerve functions. Magnesium is also required for energy production (7). Men typically lack magnesium in their diets so keep your body thriving with adequate magnesium intake.

Vitamin D
Together with calcium, vitamin D helps protect you from developing osteoporosis. Vitamin D also is required for muscle function, immune and nerve function (8). Dietary intake is not the only source of vitamin D. We can make vitamin D in our skin through exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D from foods and supplements is more important for those with dark skin, or little exposure to sunlight, such as those who live in cloudy or northern climates.

Where Can I Find This Nutrition Score?

If you’re a free user you won’t have to do anything to see this score as we’ll automatically provide you with it for the month of June. Make sure you’re on the latest version of the mobile app and swipe three times on the header bar on your Diary screen. You’ll see the men’s health Nutrition Score automatically pop up under the all targets Nutrition Score. On the web app, it’ll show up in the Nutrient Targets section on your diary page beside the all targets Nutrition Score.

For Gold users, on the web application navigate to your More > Display Settings and select the men’s health Nutrition Score as one of your eight choices. On the mobile app, go to More > Targets and then Nutrition Scores. Watch a video tutorial on YouTube.

An Additional Note On Gender Specific Nutrition Scores

First of all, we’d like to acknowledge the limitations of current practices in the medical and nutrition industries when it comes to inclusivity of trans and non-binary people. Currently, due to a lack of scientific research available to account for other options, Cronometer nutrient target calculations are sex-based, which forces you to choose a sex in order to accurately calculate settings within the app. We know that’s not ideal for some of our users, and as the research becomes available, we hope to better serve our community of transgender and non-binary individuals. Based off of the existing research, we have compiled a few nutrition considerations for the transgender population into a blog.

We understand that the release of these Nutrition Scores may be triggering for some individuals, and if this applies to you, we ask that you reach out to us. We will gladly offer a solution so you will no longer see these Nutrition Scores on your diary page.

In the months and years to come, all of us at Cronometer hope to improve how our app serves all members of our community.

Using Cronometer's Biometrics

Our biometrics are extremely handy for keeping track of important health metrics. Consistently logging biometrics like weight or heart rate will give you a better idea of health over time and can help identify trends and correlations with your diet.

Read on to find out what biometrics are and how you can leverage them.

What Are Biometrics?

As the name suggests, biometrics refer to any health metric that you’d want to keep track of.

Our database of biometrics include but aren’t limited to:

  • Weight
  • Body fat
  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood glucose
  • Lab tests like LDL and HDL cholesterol
  • Energy level
  • Mood
  • Sleep
  • Stool

How To Log A Biometric

Logging a biometric is just like logging a food.

On mobile, tap the + button > Add Biometric.

On web, click Diary > + Biometric.

You can then type to search or browse the entries. Once the biometric is selected, you can change the values, the group and Gold users can add a Timestamp. Tap ‘Add To Diary’ and voila!

Sync A Device To Automate Logging

You can automate the process of logging biometrics by syncing your Cronometer account with one of our supported apps and devices. This will seamlessly import metrics like heart rate, sleep and more directly into your Diary, saving you the hassle!

How To Leverage Your Biometric Data

If you’re logging biometrics into your Diary, don’t just let them sit there! Take a look at how they change over time with Charts

Cronometer Basic (free) users will have access to a single biometric chart, which defaults to weight but can be changed to any biometric that you track. This will help you identify any trends in your weight, heart rate or sleep over time.

On mobile, tap Discover > Charts. Tap on the weight chart and change the selected metric as needed.

On web, click Trends > Charts and use the drop down menu to change the metric.

Go For Gold

Upgrading to Cronometer Gold gives you the ability to create Custom Biometrics, so you can track a limitless amount of personalized health markers. Our database of biometrics is fairly extensive, but a lot of times you’ll need something more specific to your needs.

Start tracking your allergy symptoms, headaches, gas, lab tests and more to help dive deeper into your health.

Cronometer Gold users also have access to Custom Charts, which allows you to plot your biometrics against any nutrient, helping to identify if your nutrition is contributing to your health marker.

Using Cronometer's Diary Groups

NEW: DIARY GROUPS NOW AVAILABLE FOR BASIC USERS

Previously only available to Gold subscribers, our Diary Groups feature is now available to all Cronometer users.

Is this breakfast? Lunch? Or dinner?

With Diary Groups you get to organize your diary into different meals and because we are oh-so customizable you can name them whatever you want!

So, maybe it’s Brekkie or First Meal O’The Day or something else completely unrelated to meals and you organize by types of food! The possibilities are only limited by your imagination (…okay, and character count).

What else can you do with Diary Groups? Glad you asked! You can also copy and paste, show a nutrition summer, create a Custom Recipe or delete all available by swiping right on the Diary Group header!

How To Use Them:

Turning On & Labeling Diary Groups

Use this feature to help organize your diary entries into custom categories.

To turn on Diary Groups and manage your preferences, go to More > Display > Diary Settings. Toggle on ‘Show Groups’.

Scroll down and expand ‘Diary Groups’ and enter the label you’d like to have for each group.

Adding Foods To A Diary Group

To add a food to a specific Diary Group, select the group, then add a food. The group selection will automatically be changed for you.

You can also quick add food, exercise, biometrics and more from the Diary Group by tapping the + icon on mobile or right clicking on the web app.

You can also change the group from the ‘Group’ drop down in the food entry before adding it to your Diary.

The first group will always be the default but you can drag and drop any item into a different group if needed.

Using Diary Group Headings

On mobile, swipe right on a Diary Group and tap ⋮ to access more options like copy and paste, create recipe from group and to show a nutrition summary for the entire group.

On web, click on the Diary Group and right click to access more options.

Nutrition Score Focuses on Women's Health

Available Free To Female Users For The Month Of May

Here at Cronometer, we’re big supporters of the fact that women are not small men! Females require a unique set of macro and micronutrient targets in order to be their healthiest selves.

So, in celebration of National Women’s Health Week, we’re giving all of our female users access to our women’s health Nutrition Score! Normally our Nutrition Scores are only available to our Gold subscribers, but for the month of May, we are releasing this one score to all of our female users, free of charge.

What Goes Into The Women's Health Nutrition Score?

Our women’s health Nutrition Score includes the nutrients that females are typically lacking such as iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin D and fiber. The Nutrition Score will give you a percentage on how well you’re hitting your targets for these nutrients. In order to score 100%, you’ll need to reach your recommended daily intake of all of these nutrients. Going over the recommended daily intake will also affect your score.

Why Is This Important?

Calcium
Females are more susceptible than men to osteoporosis (3). Out of the estimated 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, 80% of them are women, meaning their calcium intake should be top of mind. 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and if one does not eat enough calcium-containing foods, the body will remove calcium from bones (4). Keep your bones in tip-top shape by keeping an eye on your calcium intake.

Iron
Women need significantly more iron than their male counterparts, mostly due to blood loss during menstruation. After menopause though, the recommended intake decreases from 18mg to 8mg per day. Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development and carries oxygen from your lungs to other parts of the body. Iron is also useful to make some hormones. Iron deficiency or anemia, is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide (6) so to counteract the odds, make sure you’re getting enough iron in your diet.

Magnesium
This mineral plays an important role in assisting enzymes to carry out various chemical reactions in the body such as building proteins and strong bones, and regulating blood sugar, blood pressure, and muscle and nerve functions. Magnesium is also required for energy production (7). Women typically lack magnesium in their diets so keep your body thriving with adequate magnesium intake.

Vitamin D
Together with calcium, vitamin D helps protect you from developing osteoporosis. Vitamin D also is required for muscle function, immune and nerve function (8). We can make vitamin D in our skin through exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D from foods and supplements is more important for those with dark skin, or little exposure to sunlight, such as those who live in cloudy or northern climates.

Fiber
A high fiber diet has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, constipation (1) and even breast cancer (2). Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check, hence why it’s touted to help with weight management and digestive health. Fiber needs for women decrease once you’re over the age of 50.

Where Can I Find This Nutrition Score?

If you’re a free user you won’t have to do anything to see this score as we’ll automatically provide you with it for the month of May. Make sure you’re on the latest version of the mobile app and swipe three times on the header bar on your diary screen. You’ll see the women’s health Nutrition Score automatically pop up under the all targets Nutrition Score. On the web app, it’ll show up in the Nutrient Targets section on your diary page beside the all targets Nutrition Score.

For Gold users, on the web application navigate to your More > Display Settings > Select the women’s health Nutrition Score as one of your eight choices. On the mobile app, go to settings, targets and then Nutrition Scores.

An Additional Note On Gender Specific Nutrition Scores

First of all, we’d like to acknowledge the limitations of current practices in the medical and nutrition industries when it comes to inclusivity of trans and non-binary people.
