3 \u00bc inch diameter), and then went for another hike to maximize my exercise and burn off some steam\/calories during a busy but mostly rainy week.<\/p><p>Sure enough, I walked and walked and walked.\u00a0 I still hadn\u2019t entered in any of the food I had eaten into the Cronometer\u2026 the truth was, I hadn\u2019t measured the soup, and I hadn\u2019t bothered to take a guess yet at how much I\u2019d eaten.\u00a0 In fact, I hadn\u2019t entered anything since my morning weight.<\/p><p>By this time it was almost time to go to an evening panel discussion and I hadn\u2019t eaten a proper dinner, nor did I have time to fix one.\u00a0 I was already lacking in accountability &#8211; I hadn\u2019t tracked a single food item all day.\u00a0 And here is the real truth: I knew there would be delicious mini apple cakes at the evening event.<\/p><p>I hadn\u2019t had dinner, hadn\u2019t eaten enough protein or fat during the day, hiked a lot, and was going to an event where I knew that one of my favorite high sugar, low nutrient foods would be served in abundance.<\/p><p>I ate two mini apple cakes and, as an \u201cOh well, I\u2019ve already screwed up for the day,\u201d measure, ate a small homemade chocolate pretzel brownie square.\u00a0 I did not tell my Cronometer, needless to say.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad9f6bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad9f6bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why We Lie<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-565319f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"565319f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I think there are several reasons why we lie, or rather, don\u2019t track, and they almost all have to do with having \u201cbad\u201d days.<\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 20.25px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 20.25px;\">We don\u2019t know the exact number of calories in foods that are off our plan, homemade or served at events where we want to eat the treats that everyone else is eating, so we don\u2019t bother to track.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20.25px;\">A lack of accountability makes it easier to say, \u201cI\u2019ve already blown the day &#8211; may as well blow it all the way!\u201d<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 20.25px;\">Shame about food is so deeply ingrained that we don\u2019t want a written record of \u201cmistakes,\u201d even if we are the only ones who see the record.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>All of this moves us away from our goals, and probably decreases our sense of self-control and empowerment.\u00a0<\/p><p>Using Cronometer not only gives us information about what we\u2019re doing and how it\u2019s affecting our health, it builds self-confidence as we realize we can make choices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9729986 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9729986\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Combatting The Lies<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7bedd9b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7bedd9b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here are some ways I\u2019ve found to be honest, take control, and get back on track with tracking!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c1cbb3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6c1cbb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Track As You Go<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e6e0ee8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e6e0ee8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since I work on the computer most of the day, I usually do this.\u00a0 You can also get the Cronometer app on your phone so there\u2019s no reason not to track.<\/p><p>With the mobile app you can make use of Cronometer&#8217;s Barcode Scanner which makes tracking super quick and easy on the go.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9bf3095 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9bf3095\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Track What You Can<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57def40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"57def40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I could have tracked my string cheese and my hiking, but I didn\u2019t bother.\u00a0 Once I ate those apple cakes, the day was out the door.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cda5e0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cda5e0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Make An Educated Guess<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-384ede7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"384ede7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Entering something is better than nothing. When I eat a homemade chocolate pretzel brownie, I can enter \u201cbrownie, chocolate chips &#8211; 1 each &#8211; 2\u201d x 2\u201d\u201d and get a reasonable guess (132.87) as to the number of calories.<\/p><p>It may not be quite right, but it\u2019s a lot more accurate than a big gaping hole where a brownie should be.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dde6312 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"dde6312\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Use Custom Recipes<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9556ff4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9556ff4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Create a \u201cnormal day\u201d diet and have lots of the items pre-entered as Custom <a href=\"https:\/\/cronometer.com\/blog\/custom-meals\/\">Meals<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/cronometer.com\/blog\/how-to-recipes\/\">Recipes<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">I have a pretty standard breakfast and lunch that I just enter as \u201cegg white breakfast\u201d and \u201ckale salad lunch.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">That avoids the complication of typing in all the ingredients, and as most of us have discovered, having a basic routine, even if we have days when we diverge from it, helps us stay on target by reducing the number of times we have to make decisions about what to eat.\u00a0 It also makes shopping and planning easier!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c85084e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c85084e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Life Isn't Perfect And That's Ok<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b26caf0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b26caf0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the end of the day, whether I track or not, I have to accept that I will have good days and not as good days when it comes to nutrition, exercise, work, or just about every area of life.\u00a0<\/p><p>Many of us may have a perfectionist streak, and we want every to look like a diary entry in a fitness magazine.\u00a0 Life isn\u2019t like that.<\/p><p>My worth as a human being isn\u2019t defined by what I ate, what I weighed, how much I exercised, how much work I got done\u2026 the list goes on.<\/p><p>By using the best tool available (Cronometer!) to know what I\u2019m eating, what I\u2019m doing, and how it affects my health, I\u2019m taking control of my own life in very personal yet very powerful way.\u00a0 That\u2019s true on days when I eat exactly according to my plan and track every bite, and days when I don\u2019t.<\/p><p>Knowledge is power &#8211; apple cake or not!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>guest post by april wilson smith, master of public health It\u2019s happened again.\u00a0 I lied to my Cronometer.\u00a0Well, I didn\u2019t entirely lie.\u00a0 I just didn\u2019t tell it the whole truth.
